This time we're there so early: it's still dark.

I must have a hearty breakfast: bread pudding and dragon fruit. After that, you don't need anything else for the rest of the day.



Ich muss kräftig frühstücken: nochmals den Brot-Pudding und Drachenfrucht. Danach braucht man für den Rest des Tages nichts mehr.





Es sieht immer noch so aus, wie damals als wir mit der VEENDAM 2019 hier schon mal waren. Ich war auch schon mit der QUANTUM OF THE SEAS 2014 hier, aber da hatten wir nur schnell gehalten, um einen medizinischen Nofall auszusetzen.

Kind of a pity: the Mariner's Brunch was canceled. So far, the coasters have been handed out here, like here on VEENDAM 2019. We also recently saw the beautiful page boy uniform from Holland America.



Irgendwie schade: der Mariner's Brunch wurde einfach gestrichen. Bisher wurden hier die Untersetzer überreicht, wie hier zuletzt auf der VEENDAM 2019. Da haben wir zuletzt auch die schöne Pagenuniform von Holland America gesehen.









Kaum sind wir an Bord und schon wollen sie uns auch schon wieder raushaben. Die Hinweise zur Ausschiffung kommen schon. Heute muss man selbst sich die passenden Gepäckanhänger holen. Joska war hier auch an Bord! Ich habe ihn ja endlich mal persönlich auf der VEENDAM 2019 kennengelernt. Ich gebe an der Rezeption Bescheid, dass eine Rampe defekt ist und man dadurch die Tür nicht so einfach öffnen kann. Eine mögliche Unfallgefahr? Ich bekomme leider nicht mit, ob sie noch etwas in Ordnung bringen.



As soon as we're on board, they want us out again. The instructions for disembarkation are already coming. Today you have to get the correct luggage tags yourself. Joska was also on board here! I finally got to know him personally on VEENDAM 2019. I told the receptionist that a ramp was broken and the door could not be opened easily. A possible accident hazard? Unfortunately, I don't get to see if they fix anything else.

Auf der VEENDAM 2019 wurde wir die bevorzugte Ausschiffungszeit abgefragt und zurückgemeldet. Später bekam man die Gepäckanhänger in die Kabine geliefert...



The company we were traveling with on VEENDAM 2019 was unavailable for an excursion according to our wishes. Also very annoying: instead of saying it directly, we had to ask several times, and many others were sold out. I initially booked and paid with the competition. But since I wanted a private tour, I wanted to know how many people fit in the vehicle. The company didn't want to answer that question. They guarantee that the car has at least two seats. They need to find out whether there are four, six, or eight in advance. We agreed that we don't have the same ideas. I then wanted a combo whale watching and shore excursion. Everyone agreed that it would not be possible. At Futurismo, I was guaranteed six places, if necessary, also eight. But that would not be decided until the day of the journey. We've met a lot of nice guys in the Friends of Dorothy group. A vehicle that would seat seven guests would be perfect. When I ask, I'm told that it's impossible. But then Patricia reports at short notice and tells me they found another jeep for eight guests because they could swap. So we can take Boris, Tommy, Jeng, Bruce, and Jay and celebrate our 25th with them. Our guide Paulo takes us to the northwest of the island. To the lakes around the Freias Caldera. It goes up steeply. Ordinary cars are not allowed to drive up here, only guided jeep tours.



Das Unternehmen, mit dem wir auf der VEENDAM 2019 unterwegs waren, stand für einen Ausflug nach unseren Wünschen nicht zur Verfügung. Außerdem sehr ärgerlich: statt es direkt zu sagen, mussten wir mehrfach nachfragen und viele andere waren dann zwischenzeitlich ausverkauft. Ich hatte zunächst bei der Konkurrenz gebucht und bezahlt. Da ich aber eine Privattour wollte, wollte ich wissen, wieviele in das Fahrzeug reinpassen. Diese Frage wollte mir das Unternehmen nicht beantworten. Sie garantieren, dass das Auto mindestens zwei Plätze hat. Ob es vier, sechs oder acht hat, können sie nicht vorab erfragen. Wir haben uns geeinigt, dass wir wohl nicht dieselben Vorstellungen haben. Ich wollte dann eine Kombi Walbeobachtung und Landausflug. Das sagten alle übereinstimmend, würde man nicht schaffen. Bei Futurismo garantierte man mir sechs Plätze, ggfls. auch acht. Aber das würde erst am Tage der Fahrt entschieden. Wir haben ja nun sehr viele nette Kerle in der Friends-of-Dorothy-Runde kennengelernt. Ein Wagen, der sieben Gäste fassen würde wäre perfekt. Als ich nachfrage, sagt man mir, dass es leider nicht geht. Aber dann meldet sich Patricia kurzfristig und teilt mir mit, dass sie noch einen Jeep für acht Gäste gefunden haben, weil sie tauschen konnten. So können wir Boris, Tommy, Jeng, Bruce und Jay mitnehmen und mit denen unseren 25-jährigen feiern. Unser Reisführer Paulo bringt uns in den Nordwesten der Insel. Zu den Seen rund um die Freias Caldera. Es geht steil hinauf. Normale Autos dürfen hier nicht hochfahren, sondern nur geführte Jeeptouren.

Wir halten an den Äquadukten, die nicht aus Römerzeit stammen.

We continue up to the Miradouro do Cerrado das Freiras viewpoint. So we can see the blue and green lakes—the north and south edge of the island. Since we have very nice weather, we enjoy the view very much.



Weiter geht es hoch zum Aussichtspunkt Miradouro do Cerrado das Freiras. So können wir den blauen See und den grünen See sehen. Außerdem auch den Nordrand und den Südrand der Insel. Da wir sehr schönes Wetter haben, genießen wir sehr die Aussicht.

Wir fahren ein Stückchen weiter zum nächsten Aussichtspunkt Miradouro das Cumeeiras.

We take a break at Sao Nicolau in Sete Cidades. In Portugal, it is part of every meal: croquettes and bacalhau. We refrain from visiting the church.



Eine Pause machen wir im Sao Nicolau in Sete Cidades. In Portugal gehört es zu jeder Mahlzeit natürlich dazu: Kroketten und Bacalhao. Auf den Besuch der Kirche verzichten wir.









Weiter geht es zum Seeufer.

After that, head to the bridge separating the green and blue lakes.



Danach geht es zur Brücke, die den grünen See und den blauen See trennt.

Die Zeit reicht noch, um uns im Versuchsgarten umzusehen.



There is still enough time to look around the test garden.

Futurismo also offers whale-watching tours. Here an employee searches for whales. So the tour ends a little later, back in the port. Paolo led a lovely tour. I go in again to say thank you to Patricia, who made it possible. The tour was to my liking: we were always one step ahead of the jeeps from the ship, and we had just met another jeep from AMADEA.



Futurismo bietet auch Walbeobachtungstouren an. Hier sucht ein Mitarbeiter nach Walen. So endet wenig später die Tour wieder im Hafen. Paolo hat eine sehr schön Tour geführt. Ich gehe nochmals rein, um mich bei Patricia zu bedanken, die es möglich gemacht hat. Die Tour war nach meinem Geschmack: wir waren immer einen Stopp früher als die Jeeps vom Schiff. Wir hatten nur einen weiteren Jeep vom AMADEA getroffen.

Die Azoren sind für den Anbau von Ananas bekannt. So holen wir uns eine alkoholfreie Pina Colada. Als wir mit der VEENDAM 2019 hier waren, hatten wir keine Minute freie Zeit zu unserer eigenen Verfügung. Daher müssen wir jetzt mal für uns ein wenig herumlaufen.



The Azores are known for growing pineapples. So let's get a non-alcoholic pina colada. When we were here on VEENDAM 2019, we didn't have a minute of free time on our own. So now we have to walk around a bit for ourselves.







Wir wollen eine Kleinigkeit hier essen und gehen in eine Bäckerei, wo viele Jugendliche und Angestellte der Büros drum herum zu Mittagessen: bei Senhora do Pao. Der Sao Jorge Käse ist eine lokale Spezialität, die wir unbedingt probieren sollten. In einem Vollkorn-Dinkel-Brötchen (oder ähnliches) probiere ich ihn und ich bekomme eine Staublunge. Ich möchte sofort ins Bochumer Bergmannsheil! Die sind auf die Behandlung von Staublungen spezialisiert. Der Käse ist verhältnismäßig hart und krümelt beim Kauen in sehr kleine Teile und so huste ich die ganze Zeit.



We want to have a bite to eat here and go to a bakery where many young people and employees from the surrounding offices have lunch: at Senhora do Pao. The Sao Jorge cheese is a local specialty that we should try. I try it in a wholemeal spelled roll (or something similar) and get pneumoconiosis. I want to go to the Bochum Bergmannsheil immediately! The hospital in a former mining region in Germany specializes in treating pneumoconiosis. The cheese is relatively solid and crumbles into tiny pieces when chewed, so I always cough.

We stroll back to the ship. In the market hall, we are unlucky: due to renovation, part of the originally beautiful market is taking place in an underground car park.



Wir laufen langsam wieder zum Schiff zurück. In der Markthalle haben wir Pech: wegen Renovierung findet ein Teil des ursprünglichen schönen Marktes in einer Tiefgarage statt.





Zurück an Bord kommt die NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC ENDURANCE an. Sie kommt gerade von der Südspitze Südamerikas.



The NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC ENDURANCE arrived when we were back on board. She's just come from the southern tip of South America.

We still had the Queijada Dona Amelia cake from yesterday. Definitely a good meal with a cup of coffee. But it is so sweet that we share it as brothers: a sorrow shared is a sorrow halved.



Wir hatten von gestern noch den Kuchen Queijada Dona Amelia. Mit einer Tasse Kaffee lässt er sich bestimmt gut essen. Aber der ist so süß, dass wir ihn brüderlich teilen: Geteiltes Leid ist halbes Leid.





Das Bord-Internet ist immer noch eine Katastrophe.



The onboard internet is still a disaster.



Wir legen ab. Ich laufe herum und gucke mir das Manöver und die Mitreisenden an. Wir haben Glück: heute hatten wir nur "Sommer". Man kann ja an einem Tag ja auch drei der vier Jahreszeiten gleichzeitig erleben. Nur "Winter" gibt es nicht.



We set sail. I walk around and look at the maneuver and my fellow passengers. We are lucky: today, we only had "summer". You can experience three of the four seasons simultaneously in one day, and only "winter" does not exist.

We go for dinner and enjoy excellent service from Kuznada. There are schnitzels. A few days ago, Willem mentioned that he had started in a schnitzel shop. But we were last at Figlmüller's after the REGAL PRINCESS 2022 in Vienna, but unfortunately, it wasn't that thin and tasty and, above all, significant. That was more for truck drivers who need it thick.



Wir gehen zum Abendessen und genießen den tollen Service von Kusnada. Es gibt Schnitzel. Willem hatte vor einigen Tagen erwähnt, dass er in einem Schnitzelladen angefangen hätte. Aber wir waren zuletzt nach der REGAL PRINCESS 2022 in Wien bei Figlmüller, aber so dünn und lecker und vor allem groß war es leider nicht. Das war mehr für LKW-Fahrer, die es dick brauchen.

Eines funktioniert beim Navigator nicht: die Erinnerungsfunktion. Sie wird nicht aktualisiert. Man wird immer noch an den ursprünglichen Ort zur ursprünglichen Zeit zur ursprünglichen Veranstaltung dirigiert. Ich weiß, dass ich Erinnerungsfunktionen für drei "Production-Shows" eingestellt habe. Am 1. Tag konnten wir alle Shows bis zum Ende der Reise sehen. Die heutige Veranstaltung hätte es nur am 1. Abend geben sollen und ich war leicht enttäuscht, dass ich die Veranstaltung nicht wiederholt werden würde - weder an dem Abend noch im Laufe der Fahrt: die Präsentation über die 150 Jahre Holland America Gesichte. Sie fand heute Abend wieder statt. Schöne Mulit-Media-Show.



One thing that needs to be fixed with the Navigator: the reminder function. It will need to be updated. You're still being directed to the original place, at the initial time, for the original event. I know I have set reminders for three "production shows". On the 1st day, we could see all the shows until the end of the voyage. Today's event should only have occurred on the first evening. I was slightly disappointed that they could not repeat the event - neither that evening nor during the journey: the presentation of 150 years of Holland America history. It happened again tonight. Nice multi-media show.

Walking around: We stumbled across the event at the Lido Bar: OOSTERDAM Bar Hop for 15 USD (2023). The event is too loud for me and with too much alcohol. I would have expected it in July at the CARNIVAL SPIRIT. We're leaving again.



Wir laufen herum: Zufällig stoßen wir an der Lido Bar auf die Veranstaltung: OOSTERDAM Bar Hop für 15 USD (2023). Mir ist die Veranstaltung zu laut und mit zu viele Alkohol. Eigentlich hätte ich es im Juli auf der CARNIVAL SPIRIT erwartet. Wir verschwinden wieder.

In einer ruhigen Ecke im Billboard onboard trinken wir noch etwas bei Rose. Hier sind neue Getränkekarten für Cocktails verfügbar. Besser als das, was es bislang gab.

I'm surprised that one other passenger only wears the HAL Orange Party T-Shirt. I retake the opportunity for a few selfies with the crew. High time for bed afterward.



Ich bin überrascht, dass es das HAL Orange Party T-Shirt nur von einer weiteren Mitreisenden getragen wird. Ich nutze die Gelegenheit nochmals für ein paar Selfies mit der Crew. Höchste Zeit danach für das Bett.
