Shipspotting NIEUW STATENDAM in Cartagena, Spain

Ich brauche Trost und Ablenkung und Hotel General Manager Don Habets und andere posten fleißig von der NIEUW STATENDAM. Nach Venedig schaffe ich es nicht. Civitavecchia ist nichts für einen Shipspotter. Und Malaga ist ausgerechnet am Samstag. So bleibt nur Freitag in Cartagena. Passt ganz gut: ich bin ja damals auf der KONINGSDAM 2016 an Bord geblieben. Murcia ist der nächste Flughafen. Aber es werden nur Ziele in Großbritannien angeflogen. Also finde ich zufällig Alicante, das direkt mit easyJet von Basel aus angeflogen wird. Ich buche den neuen Hands-Free-Service. Es klappt mit der Abgabe: 6 GBP Zusatzgebühren und man darf das Handgepäck am Gepäckschalter abgeben! Keine Gepäckkontrolle. Und Priority beim Einsteigen (nach Speedy Boarding) und Priority bei der Ausgabe. Da ich Speedy Boarding eh habe, freue ich mich auf die Gepäckausgabe: mein Gepäckstück kam als 3. letztes Stück in Alicante an. Dort kennt man wohl Priority bei easyJet nicht. An Bord kaufe ich ein Stone Baked Bacon Roll... der Fotograf hat mal wieder bessere Arbeit geleistet als das Catering Unternehmen...



I needed comfort and distraction and Hotel General Manager Don Habets and others posted many from NIEUW STATENDAM. I could not make it to Venice, Italy. Civitavecchia, Italy was not the right place for a shipspotter. And Malaga, Spain she would be on a Saturday. So only Friday in Cartagena, Spain was left. It fitted perfectly well since I was staying on board during our sailing on KONINGSDAM 2016. Murcia, Spain, was the next airport. So I found accidentally Alicante, Spain, which was served by easyJet out of Basle, Switzerland. I booked the new Hands-Free-Service. It worked pretty well with the drop-off: 6 GBP additional fee and you were allowed to drop off your bag at the check-in-counter! No baggage check. And priority when you were boarding (after Speeding Boarding) and priority when releasing the bags. Since I had Speedy Boarding anywhere, I was looking forward to the baggage claim: my bag came as third but last in Alicante. Obviously, nobody knew the Priority service with easyJet. On board I bought a Stone Baked Bacon Roll... the photographer made a better work than the catering company.

I would go by bus or train, but the trains between Alicante and Cartagena were running very rarely, and the schedule of the coaches did not fit. I rented for a little money a car from Hertz through ADAC (the German automobilist club).



Ich wäre ja mit dem Bus oder Zug gefahren, aber Züge zwischen Alicante und Cartagena fahren leider viel zu selten und der Fahrplan des Busses passt nicht. Ich miete mir für wenig Geld ein Auto bei Hertz über den ADAC.

Schade, dass ich keine Reservekanister mithabe: 1,219 EUR/l ist ja ein Traumpreis im Vergleich zu Deutschland.



So sad, I had not jerry with me: 1.219 EUR/l was a price of my dreams compared to Germany (around 1.40 EUR/l).

To my surprise, there was close to Cartagena in Torre-Pacheco, Spain an InterContinental. It was more or less part of a Golf Resort Mar Menor. Unfortunately, they had no Club InterContinental. As a Platinum-guest they did not handle me at the front desk. Fabrizio was interested to know of Asia, and I was curious to know more of Argentia. So we exchanged our recommendations since Fabrizio was from Argentina. In the hotel, everything was nicely decorated for Christmas.



Zu meinem Erstaunen bekomme ich ein InterContinental in der Nähe von Cartagena in Torre-Pacheco angezeigt. Es ist quasi Teil eine Golf Resorts Mar Menor. Leider ohne Club InterContinental. Als Platinum-Gast werde ich nicht an der Rezeption empfangen. Fabrizio interessiert sich für Asien und ich interessiere mich für Argentinien. Daher tauschen wir uns aus, denn Fabrizio ist aus Argentinien. Im Hotel ist schon alles weihnachtlich dekoriert.

Ich bekomme ein schönes Zimmer mit Blick auf den Swimming Pool. Als Ambassador bekomme ich ein kleines Geschenk: Likör 43. Es sind 22°C und die Klimaanlage funktioniert leider nicht und ich habe ein Zimmer, in die die Sonne den ganzen Nachmittag reinscheint.



I got a beautiful room with a view to the pool. As an Ambassador I got a nice gift: Liquor 43. It was 72°F, and the air-conditioning did not work, and I had a room, the sun was shining into, the entire afternoon.

Ich fahre nach Cartagena ins Kaufhaus El Corte Inglès. Oben gibt es eine Caféteria mit Dachgarten. Hier esse ich eine Kleinigkeit zu Mittag.



I went to Cartagena to the El Corte Inglès Department Store. On the top, they had a caféteria with a roof garden. Here I had a small bite for lunch.

By coincidence, I found some flannel-shirts as a bargain and indeed, I had to buy some pastries, sausages and ham.



Zufällig finde ich Flanell-Hemden im Sonderangebot und natürlich muss ich Gebäck und Wurstwaren und Schinken kaufen.

Zurück im Hotel gehe ich ins Hallenbad, dass ich ganz alleine für mich habe. Leider liegen hier keine Badetücher aus: man soll sie beim Spa abholen. Aber z. T. hat das Spa gar nicht zu den Zeiten des Hallenbades geöffnet. Sonst wirkt es ein wenig wie Alhambra in Granada, wie damals bei der NORWEGIAN SPIRIT 2013.



Back in the hotel, I went to the indoor pool, which I had all by myself. Unfortunately, they had no towels there: you should collect them at the spa. But partly the spa was not open during the opening hours of the pool. Apart from that, it reminded me very much to Alhambra in Granada, Spain like we saw on NORWEGIAN SPIRIT 2013.

I wanted to have some tapas for dinner. On the internet, I found Triana right in front of the Golf Resort. It should be open after 19:00 hrs, but it was all dark.



Abends will ich ein wenig Tapas essen. Im Internet finde ich Triana direkt vor dem Golf Resort. Es soll ab 19:00 Uhr geöffnet sein, aber alles ist dunkel.

Ich fahre in die Nähe zu La Almazara. Lecker, gemütlich und für Baseler Verhältnisse sehr günstig. Ein Lokal mit Amuse Bouche. Der Salat ist gut und lecker. Nur zu viel. Leider kein Thunfischtartar da. Das Rindertartar ist aber auch sehr gut. Und mit frischem Eigelb angemacht. Der Besuch hat sich gelohnt, weil sie einen sehr netten Service haben.



I went to a place close-by: La Almazara. Yummy, cozy and for someone working in Switzerland, it was quite cheap. A restaurant which was serving Amuse Bouche. The was good and delicious. But too much. Unfortunately, they did not have any tuna tartare anymore. The beef steak tartare was excellent too. Prepared with a fresh egg yolk. The visit was worth since they had a charming service.

At 05:30 hrs I had to head for Cartagena.

Der perfekte Zeitpunkt, um die NIEUW STATENDAM willkommen zu heißen. Ich bleibe bis zum Sonnenaufgang und gucke später am Cruise Terminal, ob zufällig jemand rumläuft, den ich kenne. Aber leider nein. Ich hätte schon gerne Hotel General Manager Don Hebets oder anderen persönlich gegrüßt.



The perfect timing to welcome NIEUW STATENDAM. I stayed until the sunrise and checked later at the cruise terminal if anyone whom I knew was walking around. But there was not anyone. I liked to say hello personally to Hotel General Manager Don Habets or others.

I was at the green lighthouse, and I was there the only shipspotter.



Ich bin am grünen Leuchtturm und dort bin ich der einzige Shipspotter.

Der perfekte Ort und man kann ganz einfach mit dem Auto vorfahren.

They offered two boat trips: Barco Turistico.



Es gibt zwei Bootstouren: Barco Turistico.

Eine passende Route, die am Kreuzfahrtschiff vorbeifährt.



A perfect route which would pass the cruise ship.

It also fit perfectly to my schedule: 11:00 hrs, the first trip would start.



Von den Zeiten her passt es auch: 11:00 Uhr geht die erste Tour los.

Aber heute kommt sie zu spät und irgendwie ist ihre Tour kürzer und obwohl sie nach uns abgelegt hat, liegt sie vor uns wieder im Hafen.



But today it was late, and the tour was shorter since she left after us but was ahead of us back in port.

I took OLE. A catamaran too but as a sailing yacht. But today it was wind-driven. But onboard it was an atmosphere like in a disco, and many guests were dancing around.



Ich nehme die OLE. Auch ein Katamaran als Segler. Leider heute ohne Segelbetrieb. An Bord geht es eher ab, wie in einer Disco und viele Gäste tanzen mit.

2. Runde Shipspotten. Und ich erlebe, wie auf der Backbordseite alle Rettungs- und Tenderboote auf Wasser gesetzt werden.

Unfortunately, there was not anyone in the tender boats I knew.



Leider niemand in den Tenderbooten, den ich kenne.

Ich fahre danach wieder nach Alicante zum Flughafen. Hier ist auch schon eine Krippe aufgebaut.



Right after, I returned to Alicante Airport. Here they had set up a nice crib.

With Canas y Tapas I went quickly to have my lunch.



Bei Canas y Tapas gehe ich noch schnell eine Kleinigkeit essen.

Ein paar Kroketten müssen sein.



I had to have some croquets.

Those with the Spanish ham were very yummy.



Die mit dem spanischem Schinken sind wirklich sehr lecker.

Leider gibt es keine vernünftigen Flüge zurück nach Deutschland. Über Madrid nur mit Übernachtung. Aber über Lissabon bekomme ich einen günstige Rückflug mit TAP Air Portugal, der allerdings länger dauert. Bis Lissabon geht es in einer ATR 72 und es gibt sogar einen Snack mit frischen Produkten aus Portugal. Der Kaffee ist gut. Leider können sie mir die Marke nicht nennen.



There were no suitable flights back to Germany. Via Madrid, Spain, only with an overnight stay. But via Lisbon, Portugal, I could get a cheap flight by TAP Air Portugal which was more time-consuming. Up to Lisbon, we had an ATR 72, and they even served a fresh snack from Portugal. The coffee was excellent. They could not tell me the brand.

We arrived in Lisbon with flying over Belem. I had the unluck that I was sitting on the wrong side, and so I could see the Jesus-Statue.



Über Belem fliegen wir Lissabon an. Ich habe Pech, dass ich auf der falschen Seite sitze und daher die Jesus-Statue nicht sehen kann.

In Lissabon steht eine TAP-Maschine im Retro-Anstrich.

At the airport, I bought some Natas from Aloma since none of Pasteis de Belem was available which we knew from KONINGSDAM 2016.



Am Flughafen kaufe ich Natas von Aloma und leider nicht von Pasteis von Belem, die wir von der KONINGSDAM 2016 her kennen. Allerdings finde ich nur ein Herstelldatum auf dem Karton aber kein Mindesthaltbarkeitsdatum.

Ich hätte gerne noch ein Päckchen Kaffee gekauft, weil die Stewardess meinte, dass der Kaffee von Delta sein könnte, aber leider haben sie nur Ausschank.



I really would like to buy a package of coffee because the flight attendant said, that it might be from Delta but they only offered coffee to drink.

Well... the German government send me the government's aircraft to get me home...



Oh... Frau Merkel bzw. Frau von der Leynen haben wir die Regierungsmaschine geschickt, um mich abzuholen...

Aber ich bleibe lieber in der Lounge von TAP Air Portugal. Nur man findet sie nicht so schnell, weil die Schilder so mitten im Terminal enden. Eine tolle Auswahl an Essen erwartet mit.



But I preferred to stay in the Lounge of TAP Air Portugal. But it was not so easy to find because the signpost ended in the middle of the terminal. They had a great selection of food.

For 120 EUR I bided for a seat in the Business Class. It was worth: 2 hours stay in Lisbon and 3 hours flight with delicious food. They still had hot food onboard. A giant duck confit. Especially since I had priority with the bag, I could make the ICE high-speed-train from Frankfurt. Without the priority, it would be hard to catch.



Für 120 EUR habe ich für einen Platz in der Business Class geboten. Hat sich gelohnt: 2 Stunden Aufenthalt in Lissabon und 3 Stunden Flug mit dem tollen Essen. An Bord gibt es noch warmes Essen. Eine Riesen Entenkeule. Vor allem dank der Priorität beim Gepäck bekomme ich in Frankfurt noch einen ICE. Ohne Priorität wäre es extrem knapp geworden.
