Seetag/Day at Sea 02.1 auf der/on OOSTERDAM

Ich gehe auf meine nächtliche Entdeckungsreise und sehe mich auf der OOSTERDAM um. Typisch Holland America. Ich bin nur verwundert, dass auch Bansky-Kunstwerke hier verkauft werden. Ich dachte immer, dass er ein Streetart-Künstler sei, dem es nicht so um den Kommerz geht. Später werden auch die üblichen Hintergründe für das Fotoshooting aufgebaut. Die Gentlemen nutzen die Chance und lassen sich fotografieren.



I go on my nightly voyage of discovery and look around OOSTERDAM — typical Holland America. I'm just amazed that Bansky's artworks are also sold here. I always thought he was a street artist who wasn't keen on commercialism. Later, the usual backgrounds for the photo shoot will also be set up. The gentlemen take the chance and have their picture taken.

Smokers must smoke at the stern of deck 9, and that's how you always get out of here. Despite the choppy sea: I can walk across deck 10 to the bow: there, I discover that deck 10 is actually closed.



Die Raucher müssen am Heck des Decks 9 rauchen. So kommt man hier auch immer wieder raus. Trotz unruhiger See: über Deck 10 kann ich zum Bug laufen: dort entdecke ich, dass eigentlich das Deck 10 gesperrt ist.

Auf ins Explorations Café im Crow's Nest. Die echte eigenständige Kaffeebar existiert nicht mehr. Sondern sie ist Teil der ehemaligen Bar. Dafür gibt es jetzt hier oben den Ausflugsschalter.

At least a barista coffee machine again and not a fully automatic machine. I found that really terrible at the EURODAM 2014. There have to be enough guests complaining constructively! Otherwise, it will always only go in one direction: downwards!

Dafür ist aber auch die Theke weg, mit vielen leckeren Kleinigkeiten... D. h. es gibt keinen leckeren Kaffee und dazu eine Kleinigkeit zu essen, am selben Ort. Wie damals auf der EURODAM 2014.



But the counter is gone, with lots of delicious little things... I.e., there is no delightful coffee and a bite to eat in the same place. Like back then on EURODAM 2014.







Früher gab es noch eine Bibliothekarin auf der EURODAM 2014 damals. Hier auf der OOSTERDAM wurde sie einfach eingespart: man darf nichts mehr mitnehmen.

Damals noch auf der ZAANDAM 2012. Da ging es darum, dass wir unsere Reise nach Hause mitnehmen können und beigebracht bekommen, wie wir alles nachkochen können. Wie in einem professionellen Küchenstudio. Und am Schluss konnte man auch die Bücher kaufen, wie auf der EURODAM 2014.

America's Test Kitchen. Das wirkte eher wie eine Kaffeefahrt oder eine Tupperware-Party auf See! Oder eine Thermomix-Veranstaltung von Vorwerk. Da standen eher die Vermarktung der Geräte und Rezeptabonnements im Vordergrund.

The marketing of the devices and prescription subscriptions were more in the foreground.











Gestern Abend sind wir in die Gallery Bar ausgewichen, nach dem wir nur 30 Minuten "ungestört" uns mit den anderen Schwulen im Billboard onboard. Eine sehr schöne Bar und zumindest kurzfristig auch sehr ruhig. Aber die Bar wird auch von anderen Gästen entdeckt und so sind wir froh, als dann uns später das Explorations Café angeboten wird, weil es dort um diese Zeit wirklich schon schön ruhig ist.



Last night we went to the Gallery Bar after spending only 30 minutes "undisturbed" with the other gays in Billboard onboard — a charming and quiet bar, at least for a short time. But other guests also discover the bar, so we are happy when we are later offered the Explorations Café because it is tranquil there now.

What do VALIANT LADY 2022 (by Virgin Voyages) and OOSTERDAM have in common: table shuffleboard? There are shuffle puck tables in the Gallery Bar, and I also saw them last year at the VALIANT LADY. Don Habets, who we know from EURODAM 2014 and KONINGSDAM 2016, is now working at Virgin. Did Don take the idea from HAL to Virgin Voyages and implement it?



Was haben VALIANT LADY 2022 (von Virgin Voyages) und OOSTERDAM gemeinsam: Table Shuffleboard? Hier stehen Shuffle Puck Table in der Gallery Bar. Die habe ich letztes Jahr zuvor auf der VALIANT LADY auch gesehen. Bei Virgin arbeitet jetzt Don Habets, den wir von der EURODAM 2014 bzw. KONINGSDAM 2016 kennen. Ob Don die Idee mit von HAL zu Virgin Voyages mitgenommen und umgesetzt hat?

Billboard onboard wurde damals auf der KONINGSDAM 2016 eingeführt. Ich kannte es von der CARNIVAL SPIRIT 2011 her. Anfangs saßen wir hier ja mit dem "Friends of Dorothy"-Treffen. Dass jemand schwul ist, heißt nicht automatisch, dass ich ihn auch sympatisch finden muss. Einer hatte einen freien Stuhl neben sich und wollte nicht, dass ich mich neben ihn sitze. Begründung: sein Freund wäre schnell auf Toilette und würde jeden Augenblick wiederkommen. Also habe ich 30 Minuten gestanden bevor wieder das Trivia anfing. Wenn allerdings mein Freund so lange auf Toilette wäre und nicht wieder auftaucht, würde ich mich allerdings fragen, ob wirklich nur ein reiner Besuch einer Toilette stattgefunden hat... und nachzählen, ob nicht ein anderer Schwulder auch so lange auf Toilette war... (Sorry, falls ihr rot angelaufen seid.) Das einzige, was ich weniger schön finde: Leider zieht unsere Kellnerin Rose nicht mit uns in das Explorations Café um. Ihr Gast zu sein, macht wirklich Spaß. Sie ist freundlich, sie ist aufmerksam, sie ist schnell. So kommen wir auch später immer wieder mal hier etwas trinken, damit sie uns bedient. Hinten in der Ecke vor der Bar, ist es ruhiger.



Billboard onboard was introduced back then at KONINGSDAM 2016. I knew it from CARNIVAL SPIRIT 2011. In the beginning, we were sitting here with the "Friends of Dorothy" meeting. Just because someone is gay doesn't automatically mean I have to find them likable. One had an empty chair and didn't want me to sit beside him — reason: his friend would quickly go to the toilet and would be back any moment. So I stood for 30 minutes before the trivia started again. However, if my boyfriend spent that long in the bathroom and didn't show up again, I'd wonder if it was just a visit to the toilet... and count to see if another gay guy was in the bathroom that long too... (Sorry if you blushed.) The only thing I don't like is that our waitress Rose isn't moving to the Explorations Café with us. Being her guest is a pleasure. She's friendly; she's attentive, and she's fast. So we always come here for a drink later so she can serve us. Back in the corner in front of the bar, it's quieter.

I'm also a big fan of a "classic" piano bar, like back then with Barry on VEENDAM 2019.

Oder James auf der ZAANDAM 2012. Der hat nicht nur unterhalten, sondern auch Musikwissen vermittelt. Der hatte "aufgeklärt", wenn es Coverversionen gibt, von wem das Original war. Seit der Zeit habe ich ja nicht nur "The Greatest Love of all" von Whitney Houston auf meinem iPhone, sondern auch von George Benson. Oder "Wind beneath my Wings" von Bette Midler, aber das Original ist von Ryan Dan.

Or King Jamsheed on RYNDAM 2013. We met him again on CELEBRITY REFLECTION 2022. You could just let yourself be entertained: beautiful music and beautiful singing. Music sometimes does not get nicer when EVERYONE is allowed to sing along and when the singers have to play and sing so loudly to be louder than the singing guests. I want to have a drink and enjoy it passively. You can't do that with Sing-A-Long. It's funny too, but I wouldn't say I like doing that daily. And a bar pianist also plays pieces where there is no singing.



Oder King Jamsheed auf der RYNDAM 2013. Ihn haben wir dann wieder auf der CELEBRITY REFLECTION 2022 wiedergetroffen. Da konnte man sich einfach nur unterhalten lassen: schöne Musik und schöner Gesang. Musik wird nicht immer schöner, wenn JEDER mitsingen darf, und wenn die Sänger so laut spielen und singen müssen, um lauter zu sein, als die singenden Gäste. Ich möchte dann nur passiv einen Drink und genießen. Das geht beim Sing-A-Long nicht. Es ist auch lustig, aber darauf habe ich nicht jeden Tag Lust. Und ein Barpianist, spielt auch mal Stücke, bei denen nichts gesungen wird.

Die Ocean Bar hätte das Potential gehabt, unsere Lieblingsbar zu werden. Wir mögen Jazz. Die Jazzband spielte am anderen Ende auf der Backbordseite und so kam die Musik nur sehr dezent auf die Steuerbordseite rüber. Die Bar wird durch die Hauptdurchgangsstraße getrennt: das mag ich nicht so. Allerdings hatten wir am Einschiffungstag ein wenig Pech. Dort mussten wir ziemlich lange auf Service am Tisch warten. Es gab keine Karten, dass wir schon mal gucken konnten, was wir überhaupt wollen. Es lief so ab, wie bei MSC und Costa: alle die sich zur Bar selbst drängten, wurden dort prompt bedient. Wenn ich italienische Zustände mag, dann fahre ich auch gerne MSC und Costa. Aber ich fahre Holland America, weil ich Service mag und am Tisch bedient werden möchte. Etwas komisch: obwohl ich hier nicht wieder gekommen bin, weil ich an den anderen Bars immer sofort und freundlich bedient wurde, kannte man mich hier. Ich wusste von den anderen Schwulen, dass sie sich auch mal hier abends aufhalten und etwas trinken. Ich schaute mich nach ihnen um. Ich wurde dann irgendwann mit Sir Tien begrüßt und man sagte mir, dass noch keiner von meinen Freunden aufgetaucht ist und man denen gerne Bescheid geben würde, dass ich sie suchen würden. Nenad von der QUEEN VICTORIA 2022 hat Recht: Ein Schiff ist wie ein Dorf - alle wissen über alle und alles Bescheid. Hängt ein Bild von mir auf der I-95? Woher wissen sie, mit wem ich an Bord bereits befreundet bin? Woher kennen sie meinen Namen?



The Ocean Bar had the potential to be our favorite bar. We like jazz. The jazz band was playing at the other end on the port side, so the music was only very subtle on the starboard side. The main thoroughfare separates the bar: I don't like that much. However, we had a bit of bad luck on embarkation day. We had to wait quite a long time for table service. There were no menus that we could see what we actually wanted. It was the same as with MSC and Costa: everyone who crowded the bar was served promptly. If I like Italian conditions, I also like to sail MSC and Costa. But I am cruising Holland America because I like service and want to be served at the table. A bit strange: although I didn't come back here because I was always served promptly and friendly at the other bars, they knew me here. I knew from the other gays that they also hang out here in the evenings and have a drink. I looked around for them. I was then eventually greeted as Sir Tien and told that my friends had yet to show up and that they would like to let them know that I was looking for them. Nenad from QUEEN VICTORIA 2022 is right: A ship is like a village - everyone knows about everyone and everything. Is there a picture of me on I-95? How do they know who I'm already friends with onboard? How do they know my name?









I like it in the atrium at night. It's always so quiet, and I can look around in peace. Something has happened at the Future Cruise Consultants. There are two of them here. Something has changed in the program: There are higher onboard credits for bookings made on board. I take a deposit, But due to bad internet lines, credit card authorization can only be done just before the end of the cruise. I love Club Orange. It has already paid off that we can get to reception very quickly. The flower arrangements in the atrium are always beautiful.



Ich mag es nachts im Atrium. Ist immer so schön ruhig. Ich kann mich in Ruhe umsehen. Bei den Future Cruise Consultants hat sich etwas getan. Die sind hier zu zweit. Beim Programm hat sich etwas geändert: Bei Buchungen an Bord gibt es höhere Bordguthaben. Ich nehme eine Anzahlung. Aber wegen der schlechten Internetleitungen kann die Authorisierung der Kreditkarte erst kurz vor Ende der Kreuzfahrt erfolgen. Ich liebe Club Orange. Das hat sich schon ausgezahlt, dass wir sehr schnell an der Rezeption drankommen. Schön sind immer die Blumenarrangements im Atrium.

Ich stehe immer noch mit einigen Future Cruise Consultants in Kontakt: Deborah von der ZAANDAM 2012. Von Zeit zu Zeit hat sie mir mal Tipps gegeben, ab wann voraussichtlich die neuen Reisen auf dem Markt kommen, so dass ich wusste, wie lange ich noch warten muss. Leider ist HAL meistens so ziemlich der letzte, der die neuen Reisen veröffentlicht.



I'm still in contact with a few Future Cruise Consultants: Deborah from ZAANDAM 2012. From time to time, she gave me tips on when the new cruises were likely to be launched so I knew how long I had to wait must. Unfortunately, HAL is the last to release new voyages most of the time.

Unfortunately no longer active for HAL as her husband (a captain) now works at Seabourn: Sheryll back then on the RYNDAM 2013. Sadly she is now a great ambassador for Seabourn and no longer for HAL. She posted so beautifully on Facebook that you wanted to book another cruise with HAL next time to where she posted from.



Leider nicht mehr für HAL tätig, da ihr Mann (ein Kapitän) jetzt bei Seabourn arbeitet: Sheryll damals noch auf der RYNDAM 2013. Sie ist leider jetzt eine tolle Botschafterin für Seabourn und nicht mehr für HAL. Sie hat immer so schön auf Facebook gepostet, dass man unbedingt als nächstes wieder eine Cruise mit HAL dahin buchen wollte, woher sie gepostet hat.

Hilfe für das Internet gibt es leider nur noch in den ersten drei Tagen. Keine IT-Spezialisten. Sondern nur zwei vom Entertainment. Und gleichzeitig noch an der Rezeption. Wenn dann zig alte Menschen, die sonst nie ihr Smartphone nutzen, auf einmal alle mit der gleichen Frage kommen: dann dauert es halt, bis dass man endlich dran kommt. Warum also keine Großverstaltung am 1. und 2. Tag? Einmal alle zu einer Veranstaltung einladen, in dem alle dran sind, die iPhones haben, und dann alle die Androids nutzen.

Eine Unverschämtheit ist jedoch das Angebot mit dem Streaming. Der normale Dienst funktioniert schon kaum. Warum sollte man noch mehr Geld zahlen, um festzustellen, das nichts läuft?

Was einigermaßen gut läuft: der KOSTENLOSE Chat-Dienst um mit anderen Passagieren in Verbindung zu bleiben. Leider wird nicht immer sofort die Nachricht zugestellt. Es kann durchaus ein paar Stunden brauchen.

Und früher hatte ja Holland America eine gewissen IT-Kompetenz: mit Kursen und Verkaufsprodukten, wie damals auf der EURODAM 2014.

Unfortunately, none of that is familiar these days. You don't notice anything anymore from the partnership with Microsoft.

In the morning, we hand over a laundry bag. The unlimited supply is not worth it. We have our tape and can fill the cloth bag to explode. We get an excellent evening service: with a towel animal, and chocolate. There are even chocolates from Jacques Torres, a French pastry chef from New York, on the gala evenings: Mr. Chocolate.



Morgens übergeben wir einen Wäschesack. Das unbegrenzte Angebot lohnt sich nicht. Wir haben ja unseer Klebeband dabei und können den Stoffbeutel zum Sprengen füllen. Abends bekommen wir den schönen Abendservice: mit Handtuchtier und Schokolade. Es gibt sogar an den Galaabenden noch Pralinen von Jacques Torres, einem französischen Patisseur aus New York: Mr. Chocolate.

Auf in das Hauptrestaurant. Es ist immer noch schön klassisch elegant, aber diese Umbenennerei geht mir auf den Senkel. Kann es nicht einfach der Vista Dining Room sein? "The Dining Room" mit dem neuen Logo macht es nicht moderner. Als ehemaliger Porzellan-Verkäufer im KaDeWe Berlin, in dem ich mein Studium finanziert habe, fällt es mir vielleicht eher auf. Es ist wie auf einem Flohmarkt! Über die zwei Wochen, gibt es Gläser, die so aussehen, als ob sie in Murano mundgeblasen wurden, aber auch einfache "ehemalige Senfgläser". Auch werden Rosenthal und Thomas gemischt. Eine bessere Frühstückskarte für Club Orange-Gäste gibt es nicht. Für die nächsten zehn Tage stehen die Preise für die Zuzahlprodukte wie frisch-gespresster Orangensaft, Mimosa und Bloody Mary. Danach werden die Preise erhöht. Die laktosefreie Milch finden sie immer noch nicht. Aber ich bekomme immer ungefragt pflanzliche Milchersatzsorten, die ich nicht mag. Ein Cappuccino mit Sojamilch schmeckt nicht. Früher hatte Holland America "vernünftigen" Kaffee. Zum Glück haben wir die Tassenfilter von Reinholz mit.



On to the main restaurant. It's still beautifully classically elegant, but this renaming is getting on my nerves. Can it be the Vista Dining Room? "The Dining Room" with the new logo doesn't make it more modern. As a former porcelain salesman at KaDeWe Berlin, Germany (department Store), where I financed my studies, I might be more aware of it. It's like a flea market! Over the two weeks, some glasses look like they were hand blown in Murano, but also simple "former mustard glasses" - in Germany, mustard is sold in simple glasses which can be reused as drinking glasses. The brands Rosenthal and Thomas are also mixed. There is no better breakfast menu for Club Orange guests. The prices for additional products such as freshly squeezed orange juice, mimosa, and bloody mary are fixed for the next ten days. After that, the costs will increase. They still can't find lactose-free milk. But I always get plant-based milk substitutes that I don't like without asking. A cappuccino with soy milk does not taste good. Holland America used to have "sensible" coffee. Luckily we have the Reinholz cup filters with us from Germany.

I miss the tray with the breakfast pastries. The philosophy has changed: nothing is offered anymore; you must ask! Psychology: I should feel uncomfortable because I'm asking for something. I used to have to say "yes".



Ich vermisse das Tablett mit dem Frühstücksgebäck. Die Philosophie hat sich geändert: es wird nichts mehr angeboten, man muss nachfragen! Psychologie: ich soll mich unangenehm fühlen, weil ich nach etwas frage. Früher musste ich bloß "ja" sagen.

Es gibt Congee aber der Uitsmijters immer noch nicht zurück. Ich sollte es wie die "Last Generation" machen. Mich im Restaurant festkleben, bis dass es den Uitsmijters wieder gibt.

I'm going to see what the Lido Market looks like. What annoys me: it is often justified: everything because of the pandemic... and now some things can be removed yourself. In the past, there was nothing to take away for the first 24 hours until it was clear that there was no norovirus on board. But the pliers are designed so that some can be removed yourself.



Ich gehe mal gucken, wie es im Lido Market aussieht. Was mich ärgert: es wird ja oft begründet: alles wegen der Pandemie... und jetzt dürfen einige Sachen selbst entnommen werden. Früher gab es die ersten 24 Stunden gar nichts zum Selbstnehmen, bis dass feststand, dass kein Norovirus an Bord ist. Aber die Zangen werden so ausgelegt, dass einiges selbst entnommen werden kann.

Es gibt aber eines, was ich sehr vermisse: die Superauswahl der Egg Benedicts, wie hier auf der ZAANDAM 2012.
